LONDON (AP) — Employees at London Zoo obtained the measure of big gorillas, plump penguins and thin stick bugs on the zoo’s annual animal weigh-in on Thursday.

Zookeepers tempted squirrel monkeys onto scales with treats, totted up tarantulas and used a curry-scented measuring follow coax Sumatran tigers to stretch out.

Employees on the zoo, which is house to some 14,000 animals, will take a number of days to weigh and measure each mammal, fowl, reptile, fish and invertebrate in its care. The outcomes go right into a database that’s shared with zoos world wide.

“We report the important statistics of each animal on the zoo — from the tallest giraffe to the tiniest tadpole,” stated Angela Ryan, the power’s head of zoological operations.

Ryan stated an animal’s weight is significant data that may reveal whether or not creatures are wholesome, and even that are pregnant.

“We now have critically endangered animals right here,” she stated. “It’s completely important that we’re managing them, managing their well being, that we’re breeding them and breeding them nicely and we’re having wholesome offspring that may breed on once more.”
